It is noteworthy that no special equipment is required to witness the Geminid Meteor Shower.

Known to be the most breath-taking meteor showers, the Geminid Meteor Showers are currently active but can be witnessed in abundance this weekend, i.e. during the night between 13th and 14th December. These meteors are said to bright and fast and seem to be yellowish in color, and as per sources, one might witness over 120 meteors per hour, provided if the skies are clear.

According to NASA, the Geminid Meteor Shower commences around 9 or 10 PM. If one wishes to witness this phenomenon, one needs to head to a place which is distant from street or city lights and look up in the sky while lying flat on your back and your feet towards the south. The eyes start to adapt after a period of 30 minutes in the dark, and thus one begins to witness meteors with naked eyes.

The Geminid meteors come from an asteroid termed ‘3200 Phaethon’, which requires 1.4 years to orbit the sun. These meteor showers were first witnessed in the mid-1800s, and eventually became one of the most astounding annual meteor showers witnessed around the globe. Such meteors are a result of leftover particles from comets and parts from asteroids. These celestial objects leave behind a dusty path after coming in the vicinity of the sun. The Earth passes through this path of debris, allowing these bits and particles to strike with our atmosphere and disintegrate, giving rise colorful streaks in the sky.
