Public outrage erupted in Haldwani on Friday as tensions rose over individuals allegedly running businesses under false identities. The protest, led by members of Hindu organizations and concerned locals, highlighted the growing dissatisfaction with vendors using misleading shop names and failing to disclose their true identities.

Protesters argued that displaying false or deceptive names on shop boards is not only unethical but also illegal. Despite repeated complaints, they alleged that no concrete action had been taken. The situation escalated, prompting swift intervention from police and administrative officials to calm the protestors.

The unrest comes in the wake of a recent incident in Nainital involving a child, which has heightened public sensitivity and demands for stricter checks on outside settlers, especially those conducting business in Haldwani.

Police detained four individuals — Vipin Pandey, Jatin, Yatin, and Chandan — during an unauthorized procession in the Kathghariya area. The detentions led to a large gathering at the local police station, intensifying the tension. Senior officials including SP Prakash Chandra, CO Nitin Lohani, City Magistrate A.P. Vajpayee, and Municipal Commissioner arrived to address the concerns and assured the public of action.

Authorities committed to verifying the identities of those running businesses in the city, especially those who have migrated from other regions. By 2 PM, the detained individuals were released, and the situation gradually returned to normal. Notable figures such as BJP leader Sachin Sah, gau sevak Jogendra Rana, and Kamal Durgapal were present during the demonstration.

In response, the municipal corporation reissued an order requiring all street vendors to display large posters of their municipal identity cards on their stalls. Those without official ID cards must visibly paste photocopies of their trade licenses. The aim is to provide transparency and help customers easily identify the vendors.

In a parallel crackdown, officials conducted an enforcement drive from Mukhani to Unchapul, issuing 15 challans and seizing 20 unauthorized carts. Authorities emphasized that these actions are part of a broader effort to ensure law and order while addressing public safety and accountability concerns.
