In a significant move to curb Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion, Uttarakhand is set to establish its first-ever digital forensic lab. Approved by the state cabinet at an estimated cost of ₹12.9 crore, the lab will enable faster investigation and strengthen the state’s ability to crack down on tax fraud.
The facility will be operated by the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Gujarat, and will specifically cater to the needs of the State Tax Department. Currently, digital evidence such as laptops and mobile devices seized during GST raids are sent to central forensic labs, causing delays in legal proceedings and enforcement. The lack of local expertise in examining digital records has often hindered timely action against firms involved in tax evasion.
With the new lab, the department expects swift analysis of seized digital data, enabling immediate action against violators. Officials believe that the lab will significantly enhance the state’s capacity to investigate GST-related offenses and contribute to a substantial increase in government revenue.
