The Uttarakhand Police Department is set to enhance road safety by introducing high-tech interceptor motorcycles to control speeding on the roads. An allocation of Rs 1.68 crore has been sanctioned from the Road Safety Fund for the purchase of eight high-performance motorcycles, including models from Harley Davidson and BMW, priced at Rs 21 lakh each. These motorcycles will initially be deployed in four districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital.

Currently, many high-speed vehicles on the roads cannot be effectively pursued by standard motorcycles, prompting the need for these advanced interceptors. The new motorcycles will be equipped with high-speed detection cameras mounted on the front, and a box on the left side of the seat will house a printer and other equipment for issuing challans on the spot.

Each of the four districts will receive two interceptors in this initial phase. If successful, the initiative will be expanded, and more interceptors will be deployed in additional districts.

The proposal for these high-tech motorcycles was initially approved in 2022 but faced delays. However, with the recent approval from the Road Safety Fund, the police are now moving forward with the plan. The initiative was discussed and advanced in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Radha Raturi.
