A heavy rain alert has been issued across Uttarakhand as the monsoon is set to arrive, posing potential challenges for the thousands of devotees undertaking the Chardham Yatra. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rains, particularly affecting the hilly districts, including Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar, from June 24 to June 26.

Weather Advisory for Pilgrims

Pilgrims are urged to stay updated with the latest weather conditions before embarking on their journey. According to Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Center in Dehradun, the state has been experiencing rain over the past three days due to a western disturbance. Pre-monsoon showers are expected to intensify from June 23, leading to significant rainfall initially in the Kumaon region, with heavy rains expected to spread statewide by June 27.

Safety Precautions

Travelers are advised to exercise caution, especially on mountainous routes, as the risk of landslides and falling stones increases with heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department recommends avoiding overcrowding on travel routes and remaining vigilant about weather updates.

Transport Disruptions

Severe weather conditions have already caused disruptions in various parts of Uttarakhand. A strong storm in Dehradun led to a tree falling on the Haridwar-Dehradun railway track, causing delays for the Vande Bharat Express to Lucknow and the Shatabdi Express to Delhi. Additionally, a tree falling on a car on the Rishikesh-Dehradun route caused traffic disruptions, although no injuries were reported.

Impact on Helicopter Services

The onset of the monsoon has led to the withdrawal of six helicopter companies from Kedarnath Dham, leaving only Trans Bharat and Himalaya Heli Company in operation. Full helicopter services are expected to resume after the monsoon subsides.

Monsoon Arrival

The monsoon typically enters Uttarakhand through the Kumaon region from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The impending rains starting June 24 are crucial as they signify the beginning of the monsoon season, which is predicted to cover the entire state within a few days.

Authorities appeal to all Chardham Yatra pilgrims and travelers in Uttarakhand to prioritize safety, stay informed about weather updates, and prepare for potential travel delays and hazards due to heavy rain.
