Uttarakhand is set to revolutionize legal processes with the introduction of an online Uniform Civil Code (UCC) portal, making it the first state in India to implement such a comprehensive system. The new portal will offer a range of services including the registration of marriages, live-in relationships, divorces, and wills, all accessible from the comfort of home.

The UCC-friendly portal is part of the draft rules being prepared by a committee headed by former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh. The draft, expected to be submitted within three months, aims to streamline legal procedures and enhance transparency in relationships by allowing couples in live-in relationships to access each other’s past information, upon mutual consent.

In a bid to make these services widely accessible, the committee has proposed that the registration of wills be made free of charge. The Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) is tasked with developing the portal and a corresponding app, ensuring ease of use for the general public.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the online system, personnel from relevant departments such as Revenue, Home, and Health will undergo specialized training. Chairman Shatrughan Singh emphasized the committee’s commitment to finalizing and submitting the rules promptly, aiming to provide significant benefits to the public.

The move towards a digital UCC is expected to save citizens from the hassle of visiting multiple offices, marking a significant step forward in legal reform and public convenience.
