The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun witnessed a proud and emotional morning as it hosted the 156th Passing Out Parade (POP) on Saturday, marking the commissioning of 451 officer cadets, including 32 from nine friendly foreign nations. The event was graced by the Sri Lankan Army Chief, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage Rodrigo, as the reviewing officer.
Lieutenant General Rodrigo, himself a 1990 alumnus of IMA, was visibly moved as he recalled his early days at the academy. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I still remember how it all began with a simple haircut, 35 years ago. And now I stand here, leading my country’s army.” His speech stirred the audience, especially when he emphasized the transformation the IMA brings—not just in shaping soldiers, but building the future defenders of nations.
Before addressing the gathering, the Sri Lankan Army Chief inspected the grand parade in front of the historic Chetwode Building. The passing out batch included cadets from the 156th Regular Course, 45th Technical Entry Scheme, and 139th Technical Graduate Course.
In his address, Rodrigo described the IMA as more than just a military institution—it is a forge for character, courage, and leadership. He stated that the foreign cadets passing out today are global ambassadors of IMA’s values and discipline. “This uniform is not just a symbol of rank—it’s a way of life. A true officer earns trust through conduct, character, and decisions,” he said.
He urged the cadets to wear their uniforms with pride and purpose, reminding them they are now part of a proud chain of patriots. Drawing inspiration from Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw’s iconic words—Be honest, be brave, be true—Rodrigo encouraged the young officers to uphold the academy’s glorious legacy.
The Army Chief emphasized the enduring military ties between India and Sri Lanka, expressing hope that his visit would further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Reviewing the parade, he praised the cadets for their discipline and performance, calling the ceremony a personal honour.
The parade also saw the conferment of prestigious awards:
- Sword of Honour – Academy Cadet Adjutant Anni Nehra
