The highly anticipated Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project marked another significant milestone on Friday with the successful completion of the main tunnel in Package-2 between Shivpuri and Gular. This achievement follows the crossing of the parallel exit tunnel in September 2023.
The 125 km broad gauge rail line from Rishikesh to Karnprayag requires 104 km to pass through 17 different tunnels, totaling 213.4 km in length. To date, 169.496 km (79.42 percent) of the tunneling has been completed. Officials from Rail Vikas Nigam extended their congratulations to the construction team from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for this remarkable feat.
Achievement in Package-2
The Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project is progressing rapidly, with L&T achieving a breakthrough in Main Tunnel-2 of Package-2 on Friday. The project manager, Rajesh Chopra, outlined the work involved in Package-2, which includes the tunneling of Edit-2 (56 meters), a double line 7-stage tunnel (80 meters), the main tunnel (6002 meters), and the exit tunnel (6066 meters). The Edit Tunnel was completed in October 2020, the Double Line-7 Stage in October 2021, and the Exit Tunnel on September 12, 2023.
The main tunnel was completed in a record time of 46 months despite the challenging Himalayan geological conditions. This accomplishment signifies the completion of tunneling in both the main tunnel and the exit tunnel. Present at the occasion were L&T’s operation head Prabhu Kumar, along with Sanjeev Tyagi, Paramjeet, and Alok.
This milestone in the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project represents significant progress towards enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
