‘Birds In & Around Mussoorie’ by IAS Sanjay Kumar Set for Grand Launch in Mussoorie

A book on Mussoorie’s avian diversity titled ‘Birds In & Around Mussoorie’ authored by Sanjay Kumar IAS is set to be launched tomorrow at Welcomhotel The Savoy Mussoorie. The event is held on the occasion of World Tourism Day. Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd.), the Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

The book, authored by Sanjay Kumar, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the 2002 batch, is a detailed exploration of the rich avian diversity found in and around the picturesque town of Mussoorie. It is expected to serve as both an educational resource and a guide for tourists, birdwatchers, and conservationists interested in the region’s natural heritage.

Sanjay Kumar has made significant contributions to environmental conservation. With over a decade of experience as District Magistrate in 10 districts of U.P., he pioneered wetland conservation in Sitapur, led Ramganga river restoration with WWF-India, and established a turtle conservation center in Bareilly. His efforts also include setting up the Chand-Khamaria Blackbuck Conservation Reserve in Prayagraj and elevating Haiderpur Wetland to Ramsar site status. A passionate wildlife photographer, Kumar has authored seven books, including Threatened Birds of Uttar Pradesh and Birds of Lucknow.

In addition to the book launch, a panel discussion will take place, featuring a distinguished group of speakers with expertise in conservation, history, and local culture. The panelists will include Dr. Dhananjai Mohan, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, Uttarakhand; Sanjay Kumar, IAS, MD, PCF, Government of Uttar Pradesh; Ganesh Saili, renowned author and longtime resident of Mussoorie, and Lokesh Ohri, anthropologist, historian, and founder of BTDT (Been There Doon That).

The discussion will center on topics related to avian diversity, nature trails, and the natural heritage of Mussoorie, aligning with this year’s World Tourism Day theme of “Tourism and Peace”.

The event will conclude with a book signing session by the author, Sanjay Kumar, followed by a formal lunch.
