On October 29, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated India’s first government-operated helicopter ambulance service at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. This initiative, launched on the occasion of Dhanvantari Jayanti, aims to provide rapid medical assistance to patients in remote and inaccessible areas, particularly during emergencies.
The helicopter ambulance service, named ‘Sanjeevani’, is designed to operate similarly to the existing 108 ambulance network, offering free transportation for patients across Uttarakhand to AIIMS Rishikesh. Equipped with life-saving medical facilities, the service is expected to be a critical lifeline for individuals in regions where road access is limited or non-existent.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who participated in the launch virtually from AIIMS Rishikesh, highlighted the significance of the service in strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure. He emphasized that the heli ambulance would be invaluable during crises, ensuring timely medical aid to those in need. A toll-free number will soon be introduced to connect all 13 district disaster management control rooms, facilitating swift deployment of the service during emergencies.
In addition to the helicopter service, drone technology is being integrated to enhance medical outreach. During trial runs, drones successfully delivered medicines from AIIMS Rishikesh to Tehri in just 30 minutes, demonstrating the potential for efficient medical supply distribution to remote areas.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster healthcare services across India, with Prime Minister Modi launching various health sector projects totaling Rs 12,850 crore during the ceremony held at the All India Institute of Ayurveda in Delhi.
The ‘Sanjeevani’ helicopter ambulance service is poised to revolutionize emergency medical care in Uttarakhand, offering a vital lifeline to patients in challenging terrains and setting a precedent for similar services nationwide.
