Following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Uttarakhand state government is set to conduct a state-wide mock drill on Wednesday, May 7. The drill is part of a national preparedness initiative triggered by the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and aims to enhance civilian readiness in case of emergencies, especially in sensitive regions.
Special focus will be placed on the border districts of Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh, both of which host critical airbases. These districts will be at the forefront of the mock drill operations, while other districts may also be included depending on situational requirements. Official guidelines regarding the scope and execution of the exercise are expected to be issued on Tuesday.
The main objective of the drill is to educate schoolchildren and the general public on how to respond to a potential terror attack or security threat. Civil defence teams, alongside local police and emergency services, are expected to play a crucial role in this exercise.
Additional Director General of Police (ADG) AP Anshuman stated that while formal orders are still awaited, the police are proactively preparing for the drill. “We are accustomed to organising such preparedness exercises, and our teams are ready to execute the May 7 mock drill effectively,” he said.
District authorities have been instructed to initiate awareness campaigns and ensure logistical readiness. The administration hopes that the drill will not only test emergency protocols but also increase public confidence and vigilance in the face of ongoing national security concerns.
