Uttarakhand is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 39°C in Haldwani and 38.7°C in Dehradun, making daily life uncomfortable for residents. The combination of blazing sunshine and high humidity levels has left people struggling to cope, with outdoor activities becoming particularly challenging over the past four days.

According to Dr. RK Singh, a meteorologist at Pantnagar Agricultural University, the oppressive heat will persist until June 11, after which pre-monsoon showers are expected between June 12 and 14. The much-awaited monsoon is likely to arrive in Uttarakhand by June 20, bringing much-needed respite. Currently, humidity levels have risen to 36%, and easterly winds are contributing to the muggy conditions, intensifying the discomfort.

Haldwani has recorded unusually high nighttime temperatures, surpassing even Dehradun, with a minimum of 28.6°C compared to the capital’s 25.3°C. Meanwhile, hill stations like Mukteshwar and Nainital are also experiencing warmer-than-usual days, with temperatures reaching 26.2°C and 30°C, respectively.

The rising heat has led to concerns about water levels in Nainital Lake, which currently stands at one and a half feet—an inch higher than last year. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the region awaits monsoon rains to alleviate the sweltering conditions.

With no immediate relief in sight, residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun until the weather changes later this month.
