Doonites are experiencing unprecedented heat as the mercury soared to 42.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, marking the second time in 30 years that the temperature has breached the 42-degree mark in June. This follows a previous high of 42.1 degrees Celsius recorded in June 2012.

According to the Meteorological Department, the current temperature is seven degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm. The last time temperatures soared this high was on June 16, 1995, when the thermometer hit 43.7 degrees Celsius. The all-time record for June in Dehradun remains 43.9 degrees Celsius, set on June 4, 1902.

The intense heat wave has left the city streets deserted, with residents avoiding the outdoors during the peak heat hours of 12 noon to 4 pm. The early morning sun was already blazing by 7 am, making it difficult for people to step outside.

Other cities in Uttarakhand, including Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Rudrapur, have also seen temperatures climb above 42 degrees, contributing to widespread discomfort and health concerns. The ongoing heat wave is posing a significant challenge to daily life, with two-wheeler riders and pedestrians bearing the brunt of the scorching conditions.

The Meteorological Department has urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses and to stay indoors as much as possible during peak hours.
