Scorching Winds Sweep Across Plains and Hills; Relief Expected After April 30
As April draws to a close, a severe heatwave has gripped Dehradun and surrounding regions, making life difficult for people across both the plains and the hills. On Saturday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4°C, the highest for the month in the last seven years. The scorching winds throughout the day left the city sweltering under intense heat.
According to official data, the maximum temperature remained four degrees above normal for the second consecutive day. The minimum temperature, however, stayed normal at 19.2°C. Interestingly, the same day last year had also seen temperatures reaching 38°C, but the previous high before that was recorded on April 26, 2018, when the mercury touched 37.1°C.
The intense heat has made even walking outdoors a challenge. By noon, the streets wore a deserted look as the searing hot winds forced people to stay indoors. Animals and birds have also been visibly distressed by the ongoing heatwave.
The mornings are no better, as the temperatures begin rising sharply soon after sunrise.
By 10 AM, the sun becomes unbearably harsh, discouraging people from venturing out unless necessary. Markets, neighbourhoods, and streets fall silent during the peak afternoon hours, a rare sight in otherwise bustling areas.
Looking ahead, weather experts predict that the dry and hot conditions will persist across the state until April 29. A slight change in the weather pattern is expected around April 30, potentially bringing some much-needed relief from the oppressive heat.
Until then, Doonites are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and pets from heat-related illnesses.
