To prevent electricity shortage in the month of May, the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has sought permission from the Electricity Regulatory Commission to purchase additional power. At present, the state’s daily power demand is nearing 50 million units.
In April, due to favourable weather conditions, the average electricity demand remained around 45 million units per day. However, with rising temperatures, Wednesday’s demand was estimated to reach up to 50 million units.
Anticipating further increase in demand in May due to rising heat, UPCL has requested approval for purchasing 290 megawatts of electricity. According to UPCL officials, a power shortage could occur in the months of April and May, making this purchase necessary.
Despite these concerns, power supply remained mostly stable throughout April, with only a few instances of cuts, mainly affecting the furnace industry for a few days. The Electricity Regulatory Commission is currently reviewing UPCL’s request for May power procurement.
