A devastating fire broke out at Delhi’s renowned Dilli Haat market in the INA area on the evening of April 30, 2025, gutting over 30 shops and causing significant losses to artisans and vendors. The blaze, which erupted around 8:55 PM, prompted an immediate response from the Delhi Fire Service, deploying 14 fire engines to the scene. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

Dilli Haat, celebrated for its vibrant display of handicrafts and regional cuisines, saw numerous stalls—including food stands and craft shops—reduced to ashes. Store owners have reported substantial losses, with some estimating damages in the crores. One vendor lamented the loss of his entire life’s savings, while another mentioned losing goods worth INR 1.5 crore.

Videos circulating on social media captured the intensity of the fire, showing flames engulfing the market and thick smoke billowing into the sky. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway.

Kapil Mishra, Delhi’s Minister of Art, Culture, and Language, affirmed that the fire had been contained and that no injuries had been reported. He stated that the administration and fire department were on the scene to evaluate the situation.

The incident has raised concerns over fire safety standards in public markets. Authorities are anticipated to carry out a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the blaze and assess whether current safety measures are sufficient. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to assist the impacted vendors and help the market regain its former charm.

Dilli Haat, operated by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a cultural hub that brings together artisans from across India. Each stall is typically allotted on a rotational basis to craftsmen under government schemes supporting rural artisans and self-help groups. For many sellers, especially from remote parts of India, Dilli Haat offers a rare opportunity to showcase their crafts in the capital.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the affected vendors and restoring the market’s vibrant spirit.
