India has reported a total of 1,009 active COVID-19 cases as of Monday, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The country recently confirmed 752 new cases, marking a steady rise in active infections, though most remain mild and under home care.

Kerala has emerged as the state with the highest number of active cases, currently accounting for 430 of the total national count. Other states with significant case numbers include Maharashtra with 209 cases, Delhi with 104, Gujarat with 83, and Karnataka reporting 47 active cases.

In a concerning development, a 21-year-old COVID-19 patient from Mumbra, who was undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital in Thane since May 22, 2025, passed away, as confirmed by the Thane Municipal Corporation.

Over the weekend, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava held a review meeting to assess the situation, particularly focusing on the rise in cases across states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. According to official sources, the Health Ministry has noted that most of the recent cases are mild and do not require hospitalisation.

The Ministry has reassured the public that it remains vigilant and is proactively monitoring the situation through multiple national agencies, including the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Surveillance for respiratory illnesses continues to be a priority to ensure early detection and management.

While COVID-19 has now become a part of the broader category of viral respiratory infections, health authorities continue to emphasize the importance of basic precautions such as maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded places, and avoiding unnecessary large gatherings.

The Union Health Ministry has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health by ensuring that appropriate measures are in place, even as the majority of cases reported across the country remain mild. The Ministry has urged the public to remain cautious but not alarmed, encouraging continued adherence to preventive practices to limit the spread of the virus.
