With the southwest monsoon having already arrived in Kerala, Uttarakhand is now gearing up for its turn, with weather experts predicting a season of above-normal rainfall. According to the Meteorological Centre, the monsoon is expected to reach Uttarakhand between June 10 and June 20. Notably, data from the past 24 days shows the state has already received 59% more rainfall than average, setting the stage for a potentially intense monsoon season.

Meteorologist Rohit Thapliyal has indicated that between June and September, rainfall across India, including Uttarakhand, is likely to be higher than usual. This excess rainfall, while beneficial for water resources and agriculture, could also pose challenges, especially in mountainous districts where multiple spells of heavy rain may lead to an increased risk of landslides, road blockages, and flash floods. The Meteorological Centre has already issued early forecasts and plans to continue issuing updates in the coming days to help local administrations and residents stay prepared.

Meanwhile, the ongoing pre-monsoon showers have brought immediate relief to the people of Uttarakhand, particularly in Dehradun. On Sunday, continuous rainfall from morning till around noon brought down Dehradun’s maximum temperature by a remarkable eight degrees, settling at 27.8°C — well below the seasonal average. Similar weather patterns were reported from other regions across the state.

The month of May, which often sees intense summer heat, has been marked this year by a series of pre-monsoon rains. Except for a few dry days, light showers have kept temperatures near or below normal levels, making the weather pleasant, especially in the plains. Meteorologists have observed that this increase in pre-monsoon rainfall is part of a shifting weather pattern, possibly linked to broader climate change effects.

Looking ahead to Monday, forecasts suggest that some areas of Dehradun may experience light rainfall, with daytime temperatures expected to reach a maximum of 33°C and a minimum of 22°C. Authorities and residents alike are keeping a close watch on the changing weather as the state moves closer to the full onset of monsoon, which is expected to bring both blessings and challenges in the weeks ahead.
