Communal tension gripped Nainital on Wednesday night following allegations that a contractor named Usman raped a minor girl. The incident triggered violent protests, with crowds gathering in Mallital from around 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM.
Violence Erupts After Allegations Surface
As news of the alleged rape spread, angry mobs vandalized shops belonging to the Muslim community. Protesters surrounded Mallital Police Station, demanding that the accused be handed over to them. Some raised slogans of “Pakistan Murdabad” and pelted stones at a religious place. Police responded with a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Widespread Damage and Chaos
Protesters overturned vehicles in the Gaadi Padav market, smashed shop goods, and hurled bricks at houses, breaking windows. Terrified residents pleaded for calm as the mob moved through the area. Police struggled to control the situation as the crowd kept regrouping over a stretch of 500 meters.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to protesters, Usman had called the girl to his home three days earlier, paying her ₹200 for household work. The next day, he allegedly took her in his car, raped her, and abandoned her on a main road. The girl’s family filed a police complaint on Wednesday, leading to Usman’s arrest.
