The summer sun has begun to show its intensity across Uttarakhand, particularly in the plains, as temperatures continue to rise sharply. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the second week of May has seen a significant jump in temperatures, with heatwave conditions developing in several parts of the state.

Cities like Haridwar, Roorkee, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Rudrapur, Kashipur, and Vikasnagar have all recorded daytime temperatures around 35°C. Pantnagar, in Udham Singh Nagar district, has emerged as the hottest city so far, with temperatures soaring past 38°C. Dehradun, the state capital, recorded 36°C on Tuesday.

The IMD has warned that temperatures are likely to climb further in the coming days, particularly after May 15, making conditions increasingly difficult in the plains. This marks the second consecutive day of intense heat, with minimal signs of respite for residents.

However, there is some relief in sight for hilly regions. IMD Dehradun Director Dr. Bikram Singh has forecast light to moderate rainfall in districts like Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Despite this, the rest of the state is expected to remain dry, with both day and night temperatures continuing to rise.

Overall, the weather department’s forecast suggests that while the hills may experience scattered showers, much of Uttarakhand will remain under the grip of a dry and intensifying summer heatwave.
