The Uttarakhand government is set to implement an automatic system for green cess collection from June 15, targeting vehicles entering the state from other regions. The Transport Department has accelerated preparations, and a private company has already been selected through a tendering process to develop the required software, which is now ready.

Initially, the cess collection was planned through FASTag alone, but authorities have now opted for an advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system. These cameras will identify vehicle number plates at entry points, and the corresponding amount will be automatically deducted from the vehicle owner’s FASTag account.

The move aims to generate substantial revenue for the state while offering a reliable system to monitor the inflow of vehicles. The software is being integrated with central transport and related government portals to ensure seamless operation and data sharing.

Joint Transport Commissioner Sanat Kumar Singh confirmed that the green cess collection system is scheduled to go live from June 15.

Fixed Green Cess Rates (in INR):

  • Four-Wheelers: ₹40
  • Three-Wheelers: ₹20
  • Medium Vehicles: ₹60
  • Heavy Vehicles: ₹80

(Note: Quarterly and annual payment options will be available.)

The initiative is expected to not only aid in pollution control efforts but also enhance vehicle tracking across the state’s borders.
