Renowned English author and Padma Bhushan awardee Ruskin Bond has decided to celebrate his 91st birthday in a simple manner at home in Mussoorie, opting out of his traditional public appearance in light of the recent terror incident in Pahalgam.
According to his grandson, Rakesh Bond, the beloved writer has turned 91 on Monday and has chosen to observe the occasion with a quiet family celebration. In previous years, Bond has been known to mark his birthday surrounded by fans at the iconic Cambridge Book Depot on Mall Road, where he regularly interacts with readers and well-wishers.
This year, however, the decision to avoid a public celebration has left many of his admirers disappointed. Sunil Arora, owner of the Cambridge Book Depot, confirmed that Ruskin Bond will not be attending the store this year. “Fans look forward to meeting him every year, and his absence has certainly caused a sense of disappointment,” Arora said.
Bond, known for his deep connection with the hills and his readers, made the decision as a gesture of sensitivity following the tragic terrorist incident in Pahalgam. His quiet observance this year reflects the writer’s empathy and his respect for the somber mood of the nation.
