Uttarakhand is preparing for an early arrival of the monsoon, which is now expected to reach the state by June 10, nearly five days ahead of its usual schedule. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this year’s monsoon season will not only arrive sooner but also bring more rainfall than the average recorded over past years.
Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Center, confirmed that the state is likely to witness strong pre-monsoon showers in the first week of June, particularly over the hilly districts. “The pre-monsoon rainfall has already started in some areas, and we expect several rounds of intense showers over the hills in the coming days,” he said.
However, Singh added that after June 5, there might be a brief period of reduced rainfall, offering people some relief from the wet weather. “While light showers will continue before June 5, we expect a temporary break. The real surge in rainfall will happen after June 10, once the monsoon officially sets in,” he explained.
The IMD also shared an optimistic forecast regarding the overall rainfall for the season. Uttarakhand’s long-term average seasonal rainfall is 87 centimetres. This year, the meteorological department predicts that the state will receive about six percent more rainfall than this standard, which could push the rainfall total to approximately 108% of the average — a positive sign for farmers, water resource planners, and the environment.
