In Roorkee, drowning distress calls are no longer directed to the police but to Monu, a local hero known for his incredible swimming skills and unwavering dedication to saving lives. Monu arrives like a guardian angel, diving into the canal without a moment’s hesitation.

In just the past six months, Monu has saved 60 people from drowning. Over the past five years, that number has crossed 600. Recognising his unmatched bravery and service to humanity, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Haridwar, has honoured him three times.

Roorkee’s Ganga canal, which flows through the heart of the city, often becomes the site of tragic incidents – from accidental drownings during bathing to desperate suicide attempts. In these moments, Monu becomes a saviour for many.

So revered are his skills that locals now bypass the emergency services and call him directly when someone is seen drowning. His swimming abilities surpass even trained swimmers, and he has become a vital part of the local police response team, especially during the Kanwar Yatra and the annual Urs at Kaliyar.

Apart from saving lives, Monu has recovered over 500 bodies from the canal. The police rely solely on him for this difficult task whenever a body is reported stuck or seen floating.
Despite his heroic work, Monu leads a humble life. He lives in a makeshift hut near Solani Park with his family and runs a small tea stall to make ends meet. Interestingly, most drowning incidents also happen around Solani Park, allowing Monu to respond swiftly.

A father of three, Monu is now teaching his children how to swim, hoping they will continue his legacy of saving lives. “There is no greater peace than saving a life,” he says.

Understanding his economic struggles, the police have recommended Monu to be appointed as a ‘Disaster Mitra’ under a government scheme. This would entitle him to a stipend and formal recognition. CO Narendra Pant confirmed that Monu’s name has been sent for consideration, and both he and his family are expected to benefit from the government support soon.

In the eyes of the people of Roorkee, Monu is more than just a good swimmer – he is a living legend.
