Starting today, all government and aided schools across Uttarakhand will include the recitation of Shreemad Bhagavad Gita shlokas during their morning assemblies. As per a directive issued by Director of Secondary Education Dr. Mukul Kumar Sati, students will not only listen to one shloka each day but also understand its meaning and scientific relevance.
The initiative aims to help students develop value-based thinking, emotional intelligence, decision-making skills, leadership qualities, and a balanced outlook on life, drawing from the timeless wisdom of the Gita. Schools have been instructed to declare one value-based shloka every week as the “Shloka of the Week” and display its meaning on the school notice board. Discussions and feedback sessions will be held every week to reinforce its understanding.
Teachers are expected to explain how the teachings of the Gita relate to fields such as psychology, logic, behavioral science, and ethics from a secular and scientific perspective. Students are to be guided to incorporate these values not just as academic content but in their daily lives and behavior, thus supporting holistic personality development.
The inclusion of Shreemad Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana in the State Curriculum Framework has also been confirmed. Following instructions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, textbooks based on this framework are expected to be introduced from the next academic session in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Dr. Sati emphasized that the Gita is not merely a religious scripture but a guiding light for life, backed by scientific reasoning and psychological insight. He said that its teachings have the potential to transform students into responsible, balanced, and enlightened citizens.
